Kogi West poll: CDD tasks stakeholders on credible process

AS voters in the Kogi West Senatorial District and Ajaokuta Federal Constituency cast their votes on Saturday, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has called for a credible process. The CDD, in a statement signed by its Director, Idayat Hassan, warned that given the violence, voter intimidation and brazen electoral fraud that characterised the November 16 polls in Kogi and Bayelsa states, the onus is now on all electoral stakeholders, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to redeem themselves. The Nigerian Correctional Service has commenced a probe into the alleged $1 million scam perpetrated by one Olusegun Aroke, aka Hope Aroke, who is serving a 24-year jail term in Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Lagos. The convict, who was the subject of an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, reportedly pulled the heist using a network of accomplices. The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has announced the adjournment of collation of Kogi results to 9am on Monday. The results of only Ibaji and Lokoja local government areas are outstanding with Governor Yahaya Bello in clear lead in 11 local governments. His closest opponent Engr Musa Wada of the People Democratic Party(PDP), who has rejected the outcome of the exercise, is leading in eight local governments.

The Centre for Democracy and Development said political parties used fake news to delegitimise Independent National Electoral Commission and the electoral process during Kogi governorship election. Ms Idayat Hassan ,Director CDD ,made this known in the group’s preliminary statement on the conduct of Saturday’s Kogi governorship election. Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) at the 2019 Kogi Governorship Election, Natasha Akpoti, has cast her vote in the polls, after which she accused incumbent Governor Yahaya Bello of sponsoring violence. Akpoti told reporters that she has the “tremendous support” of the Kogi people but is worried about the violence being sponsored by her opponent. “I have the tremendous support of not just people from Kogi Central, but also Kogi East and Kogi West,” she said. “And it is unfortunate that the government at hand, with due respect to the APC candidate, Yahyha Bello, has decided to take laws into his hands and sent thugs to attack.” Akpoti also noted that she was concerned about the level of training exhibited by the INEC officials at the ward where she voted.

Kogi: Two fake NSCDC men arrested PDP alledge

The Deputy Director, Public Communications of the Kogi State Peoples Democratic Party Campaign Council, Usman Austin, on Saturday, raised the alarm that two young men who dressed in the uniform of officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps have been apprehended in Ayingba Dekina Local Government Area by the people. In an interview with our correspondent, he stated that the suspects were later handed over to the police. He also said that electoral materials in Odu 1 and 2 wards and Community High School in Ayingba, had been hijacked by thugs.

Gunshots As Suspected Thugs Attack Polling Units In Kogi

Elections have been disrupted in ward 2, Lokoja, as gunshots were fired into the air by suspected thugs who made away with ballot boxes. Channels TV gathered that voters in the Ajayi Crowther Memorial School are scampering for safety. Commencement of voting in the polling unit which is the biggest in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital had a delay due to late arrival of security officials. Meanwhile, in Aiyetoro 2, polling unit 003 in Kogi West Senatorial district, thugs disrupted voting exercise and destroyed ballot boxes. The polling unit which is next to the office of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) had littered all over, ballot papers and destroyed boxes. There was no presence of security officers, voters or electoral officials as at the time Channels TV crew arrived the unit.

A fake police officer has been arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Force at the Igala Unity Square area in Anyigba, Dekina local government area of Kogi State. The fake policemen, dressed in black T-shirt and black trousers with a black jacket with SARS inscribed on it was accosted by a team of actual Special Anti Robbery Squad officers who were on patrol in the area. When accosted and upon inquiry, it was realised he was not a policeman as he claimed to be and was immediately arested. Court refuses to remand Maina’s son in NCS custody

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja on Wednesday dismissed the application filed by Faisal Maina to be relocated from the custody of the Nigeria Police Special Tactical Squad to the Nigerian Correctional Service facility. Faisal and his father, Abdulrasheed, the former Pension Reform Task Team chairman, are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on 12 counts bordering on operating fictitious bank accounts, money laundering and fraud to the tune of N2.1bn. While his father was remanded in the NCS facility in Kuje, Abuja, Faisal was sent to the police custody in Asokoro. The court had fixed Wednesday for the commencement of the trial of the defendant, but when the matter was called, his counsel, Francis Oransanye, informed the court that he was denied access to his client by the police. He, therefore, requested the transfer of the defendant to the correctional centre, arguing that access to his client would enable Faisal to prepare

The Senate on Thursday mandated its Committee on Water Resources to investigate delay in non completion of Kagara Dam and one million gallon water treatment plant in Niger state. The mandate, followed adoption of a motion at plenary on the urgent need for the Federal Government to complete Kagara dam and one million gallon water treatment plant in Niger State. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for immediate and unconditional release of its Head of Security in Dekina Local Government area of Kogi, Mr Edeh Abutu, and others allegedly arrested in the state. The party made the call at a news conference addressed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, on Sunday, in Abuja. Ologbindiyan alleged that Abutu and some other PDP members in Kogi were arrested on what he called trumped up charges and taken to an unknown destination “where they were believed to be under torture”. He recalled that on Thursday, the PDP had raised the alarm over alleged plots to clampdown on key party leaders in the state.  Former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina has been wheeled into the Federal High Court in Abuja where he is facing charges of money laundering. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Maina and his son, Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina on 12-count charges and three-count charges respectively of money laundering and concealment of proceeds of unlawful act in October. A former Governor of Kogi State, Ibrahim Idris, on Tuesday directed his son, Abubakar, his followers and his political structure in the state, Ibro Political Family, to work for the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party in the November 16 governorship election. Abubakar, who was an aspirant during the September 3 PDP governorship primary, confirmed the directive in an interview with punch correspondent in Abuja. No fewer than 13 persons have been killed at the Kogi State University, Anyigba, following clashes among suspected cult groups. The killings which began on Friday, was allegedly due to the killing of a student of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, suspected to be a kingpin of a cult group. Three of the victim were hacked down around the Stadium Road and Fatima Lodge within the KSU campus while nine others were killed at different locations in the university environs. Among those killed were; one Oloruntoba Godwin, a 300-level student of Geography, and one Ajileye Richard, who is a 200-level student in the department of Accountancy. Some of the students injured following the incident were rushed to the hospital. When contacted, the commissioner of police in the state, Hakeem Busari, confirmed the incident, but said only three students were killed.

The Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday raised the alarm that some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and some leaders of the All Progressives Congress were allegedly plotting to delist the PDP Kogi State governorship candidate, Musa Wada, from contesting the November 16 governorship election.
